We are an active group that meets regularly on the 2nd and 4th Saturdays
of each month in the North Dallas area. Currently we are meeting at:

The main portion of the meetings are held between 2pm and 5pm. More than
likely something's going on before and/or after those times but that's up
to whim of the members.

A more social gathering occurs on the 2nd Thursday of each month at the Denny's
restaurant in Addison. Denny's offers free WiFi (so bring your laptops)
and they are open 24-hours so we don't get kicked out until we are ready.

Come meet other Python programmers over dinner and talk into the late hours.
Come late if you need to, we'll still be there!

We also frequently chat via IRC, especially during meetings. It's a great
way to pass around URL's and other information during a talk or discussion.

mailing list.

We use Meetup.com as a secondary club site, mainly as an advertisement for
new members and for its automatic email notifications of meeting events.
Currently, this wiki, the Meetup.com pages, and our mailing list are in a
state of reorganization. These pages, a wiki, is currently under de-struction
into more of a pure informational point of presence until a new, snazzier,
possibly Python-based club website is designed and constructed.

In researching places to meet, I wonder about the following:

• would anyone like to meet on Sat/Sun afternoon? I can have full run of the conference center at my apartment for free anytime the office is open. My apartment is at Bush Tollway and Central Expressway.
• if we called a coding sprint, does everyone have a laptop (or PC) they could bring?
• does anyone have a portable wireless access point? The apartment conference center lacks Internet connectivity but wireless would still let us share code using a room server.

Hi all,

I joined last month and have been since following what you all have been discussing. Haven't been able to attend the meetings due to a six month-old baby and a tired mom

First of all, I'd like to express my appreciation to Jeff Rush, for pioneering (or Pythoneering ) the user group. It's high time for DFW python users like us to unite, stand up and be counted.

Having said that, one thing that is not clear to me is "what is the vision" of this group? Jeff has mentioned his desire to conduct python classes. Is the vision of the group then to provide Python teachings? For me personally, I don't think I need such classes. Not that I don't want to learn, but I am the type of person who learn more by doing, not by sitting in classes.

Classes are fine for presenting new ideas/tools/technologies, and I am not at all opposed to them, but to make them the main activity of the group, it might end up holding back the group's potential. I think the main activity of the group should be geared to working on projects.

One of the hallmarks of successful user groups are projects that were born out of them. In the age of internet, we don't necessarily need to sit in one room to work on a project collaboratively. And other user groups have been doing this successfully.

By doing projects (or simply going through the exercise to define a project to work on), it will level the playing field for all group members. It will soon be apparent who is interested in what. That way we can move forward in a more focused manner. Don't worry too much about knowledge distribution, the more experienced members will soon be mentoring the newer ones within the context of the project.

If we need to conduct introductory classes to educate new users, it should be done towards a goal of helping out with the main project. This way, even new members can be productive and start contributing to the project.

Ok, enough motivational stuff, now on to the project itself. Let's use this thread to compile potential project ideas. I'll start:

- Create a syntax checker for .py files This is an itch that has been bothering me. Say when I refactor a .py file and createing classes out of global stuff, I don't have a high confidence that my code will work because I must have forgotten a colon at the end of a function def or the ubiquitous "self" prefix. It would be nice if we have a tool that can check the syntax of a .py file.

- Create something out of the twisted framework I have been tinkering with twisted (google: twisted matrix python), I saw a great potential out of it, but I can't get past the tutorial. First it's using an archaic tool as a context (who's using finger anymore now?) and it assumes quite a bit of knowledge in the usage of finger. I am not saying that it's a bad tutorial, I just don't get it. And that's rare for Python tutorials.

- Create an IoC? container in Python I see the need of having an business class container that can push Python into the mainstream corporation "mindset". Zope is a great pioneer, we need more like it. Inspired by the Spring Framework (google: spring framework), which I think is one of the most elegance piece of software engineering, I see the opportunity for Python to leapfrog its competitors into the mainstream by providing an Inversion of Control container (google: inversion of control) . The cool thing about Spring Framework is it's non-intrusiveness, you don't have to use it exclusively, it can be used together with whatever you already use. If we have something similar in python, we can build it on top of let's say Twisted (assuming someone here can help me to get past the tutorial )

- I can go on, but more importantly, what do y'all think so far?

These are good thoughts, and I share your enthusiasm. Sorry for the delayed reply.

I like the idea of jointly working on projects, though I think that should be a spinoff for those who are interested, rather than the entire focus of our meetings. For the regular monthly meetings, I'd like to see a mixture of planned topics and spontaneous discussion, maybe a 50/50 ration. Among planned topics might be the status of any projects that are being worked on outside the monthly meeting.

Here are some topics I'd like to see on the agenda in the future:

        * PyCon? 2005: Those who attended can tell about it
        * Shared project idea brought up by Will
                - brainstorm project ideas
                - discuss who is interested in what
                - discuss what's really needed in Python community=
        * Python evangelism in the Dallas area
                - teaching initiatives to help newbies get started
                - promoting Python for use in the enterprise
                - getting the word out about local Python user group
                - how to help Python Software Foundation (get sponsors)
        * Python professional development
                - discuss of best practices and tools available
                - discuss professional assocations for programmers
        * Meeting places
                - let's develop a repertoire of places we can meet
                        - places with a projector and whiteboard would be nice
        * Mailing List & Wiki - let's open more lines of communication

Ok, so that's a lot of stuff to talk about. We could probably have a whole meeting just about PyCon?. Whatever we do or talk about, I'm looking forward to it.
